I had the pleasure of attending the Nvidia GTC22 event recently. Over four days, they did a good job of scrambling my brain. Take a look at some of the sessions that apply to you- amazing stuff.
I focused on the Industrial Metaverse and where it is going. It is only at the beginning of its journey, but the feast of predictions, future forecasting and bold, clear visions on this was impressive.
Jensen Huang, the NVIDIA CEO gave the keynote where he took us into that opening understanding and a closer look at the game-changing technologies that are helping us take on the world’s greatest challenges. I really had to break this nearly two-hour keynote into “bite-sized” segments to absorb all the releases, updates and the speed of development that NVIDIA are undertaking.
Rev Lebaredian, VP within the Omniverse group, gave us a clear view of how and where the Industrial Metaverse can head. NVIDIA Omniverse is the platform for future building.
The Omniverse platform is for creating and operating metaverse applications.
The metaverse—the 3D internet—is delivering enormous opportunities for everyone. From artists building content across multiple 3D tools, developers building AIs trained in virtual worlds, or enterprises building digital twin simulations of their industrial processes, metaverse applications are here, and everywhere.
NVIDIA Omniverse™, an extensible platform based on Universal Scene Description (USD), is helping make it happen by enabling individuals and teams to build custom 3D pipelines and simulate large-scale virtual worlds faster than ever.
Within the many sessions, they talked about the long list of understanding what needs to be built and put into place to get to this future vision of the Industrial Metaverse.
These included discussions or views on Future Architecture, AI, Deep Learning, Virtual Collaborations, Graphics, Simulation, Edge Computing, Robotics, Real-time Performance and Simulation, Data Science needs High-Performance Computing, the fusing of the Real world and the Virtual worlds, Digital Twins, Distributed Computer needs and so much more.
Bandwidth, Latency and Power were often mentioned, and many times I felt they must be talking about what I needed, not what the industry has to deal with to realize these visions of the future to make them a reality.
There were plenty of leading world-class speakers on their given subject and topic and a host of downloadable to browse through later.
Still, this was an amazing “glimpse” into the view of the future, seen from the NIVIDIA perspective.
So I needed some time to process this and reverted back to one of my favourite frameworks, the three horizon planning model, and I have provided a link to one of my many posts on this great framing methodology.
Let me provide what I see as the need to achieve in the years ahead for all those in the industrial world to reach this industrial metaverse. I have kept it simple at this stage (shown above and here again) as the steps in time, newness, and adoption are significant, but hopefully, this visual provides many of the triggers to reflect upon.
Just take your time absorbing these.
If we do not achieve interoperability, data exchange, and ensure that IT/OT are merging in software and architecture design, we will have a very disjointed path into future horizons of gaining the real benefits. I feel this is paramount to a future where we can extract a much higher value from the value of technology. Moving from the horizon one, needs significant attention and operating ability to achieve.
If we do not get into managing data differently, using the cloud, building our analytical capabilities, and gaining increasing comfort in building out both the physical and virtual worlds, again, we will not move forward towards this Industrial Metaverse where we need this digital mindset to be omnipresent.
Ramping up, scaling, exploring, and building out understanding is a long journey, I have placed this into horizon two, where you need to bring new learning into your current business but simultaneously bring the virtual world to the fore in design, thinking and achieving comfort, then you will not yield the benefits ahead.
Just look at what I see as the future, shown in horizon three; it is about the delivery of new value creation and a deep, deep understanding of building out the future of the industry you are operating within today.
So if you have time, do dip into the Nvidia GTC22 event of this past week. It opens up your mind and begins to bring YOUR mindset to work in the digital world.
So why did I entitle this plumbing, pipeworks and pumps?
Simple, we have to rewire ourselves, our factories or operations and lay in the essential plumbing; we also need to make the connections, inside and out in pipework that delivers the speed, pressure and resilience and finally, the pumps are the platforms, data engines and the clouds that give us the real horsepower to make the necessary changes in a connected world.
